Belize to Gutemala and Back Again22 August 2004
Ok, lots has happened since I last wrote, below's just a sampling...
After the escaping the marauding Belize kids and making off with their illicit pile of mexican pesos, we hit the border town of Punta Gorda and made a stormy crossing to Guatemala. Very nearly leaving my bag behind, Fatima made a heroic leap back to land to grab it and get back on board.
In Guate, we went round all the banks looking for an ATM that would accept my card. By chance we coincided with the team refilling all the machines. The pump-action shotgun armed security guards started to get suspicious by the time we had followed them to the 3rd machine but luckily with smiles and a photo op all was resolved. We jumped on the 6hrs bus trip down to Gutemala city, stayed the night (Uneventful, we made a quick tour around town while running at 6am) and onto Antigua.
Two great excursions from Antigua - Pacaya volcano(http://www.davidgoodwin.net/myphotos/centralAmerica) and rented a mountain bike (5USD) and spent the day touring little local pueblos and dirt track riding.
Today has been a marathon! Up at 3:30am - Trip back to Gutemala city, flight to Flores, bus to Tikal, the largest mayan site, and then return to Belize. Got the best taxi trip ever to make up for getting conned at the Mexico-Belize border. Driver picked me up and drove the 90KM to the border for 20 Quetzels (<3USD). Currently camped in San Ignacio which is the greatest town I've seen! Very friendly. I quickly got a flea-pit hotel and then jumped in the local river to cool off. Now its time to go find some Belikins! Tomorrow is cave canoeing!
